Q&A Semcon – Bike engine
What is this product?
It is a smart bike engine that turns any bicycle into an electrified bike to an affordable price. It’s designed to make it easier for people to bike – less effort in hills, easy to share between bikes and suitable for smart features such as adaptation of electrified support depending on hill gradient or connection to the mobile phone.
Who do you think will use this engine?
The needs and wishes of the typical biker is what got us started. The benefits of the electrified bike are obvious, but they are expensive. Especially if you like many others already have a regular bike that you like and short distances to travel. The ambition with this engine is to make it easy, affordable and attractive for any biker to turn their bike into an electrified bike.
Is it available for purchase?
Today, the engine is not available for end consumers. Semcon are currently looking for investors interested in bringing the bike engine to the market.
How does it work?
A small computer, a battery and a small wheel put together makes the rear wheel spin. The engine detects the cyclist pedaling and is only active in speeds between 7-25km/h. This ensures a comfortable, smooth and safe ride since the engine interprets the cyclist pedaling and intentions. The small computer on which the software controlling the engine runs makes it possible for Semcon to develop different apps in the future. It could for example be different modes, prioritizing speed or reach, or other applications such as theft-control or tracking.
How far is it possible to bike with the engine?
The possible reach is dependent on multiple aspects: the capacity of the battery itself, the weight of the bike, the speed, the surface and the terrain. The average bike route is not very long, in Sweden it is 2,8 kilometers. And the Semcon bike engine strives to help as many end users as possible.
Does it fit all bikes?
Yes, that’s the ambition. The engine is fitted to the frame and adjusted in order to connect the engine with the rear wheel.
When will it be out on the market?
The current version is a fully working prototype. However, it is not available for retail at the moment. Semcon is currently looking for investors interested in bringing the bike engine to the market.
